The Initiative for Digital Humanities at UT Austin announces the inaugural AVAnnotate Teaching and Research Fellowships for Fall 2025. AVAnnotate is a free and open source application for making digital exhibits and editions with audiovisual materials. Fellows will be awarded funding to design and complete an AVAnnotate project over the course of the 2025 Fall semester. Applications close on Monday, September 22, at 11:59 p.m.
Applicants can choose between two types of fellowships:
- Teaching Fellowships
- Research Fellowships
Earning Criteria and Deliverables:
- Attend Bi-weekly (every two weeks) check-ins with AVAnnotate team members for troubleshooting and brainstorming.
- Research Fellowships: Create an article-equivalent AVAnnotate project (adheres to norms for scholarly, academic writing and contributes to scholarship in the fellow’s field), including an introductory essay, index terms, transcriptions, and conceptual annotations.
- Teaching Fellowships: Create an AVAnnotate-centric lesson plan or module with learning goals and objectives, rubrics, and an example student project.
Compensation:
- Fellows will receive funding, training, and support from the AVAnnotate team.
- $1,500 disbursed in two payments during the semester according to project milestones.
Application Materials:
- Project Proposal: Outline your research/teaching focus and proposed project.
- Research Fellowship: Briefly describe your research focus. What relevant skills and experiences do you have? (100-150). Provide a description of your proposed project (250-300 words). What audiovisual materials will you be working with? What research questions will your project address? How will AVAnnotate support your analysis?
- Teaching Fellowship: Briefly describe your teaching focus. What relevant skills and experiences do you have? (100-150 words). Provide a description of your proposed project (250-300 words). What course(s) will your project support? How will AVAnnotate be integrated into your teaching practices? What learning outcomes will it support?
- Project Outline: Outline the scope and goals of your project (500 words max). Consider including the following:
- Describe the main objectives and anticipated outcomes.
- Provide a proposed timeline of major milestones for your project.
- Indicate what resources (collections, archives, digital tools, etc.) you will need.
- Describe what support/expertise from the AVAnnotate team will help your project succeed.
- Deliverables and Sharing Plan: What deliverables will your project produce? How will you share or disseminate your work? (200-250 words)
Eligibility:
- UT Austin faculty and graduate students in good standing.
