Description: This SSA position does not require technical knowledge. Scholars and teachers use the AVAnnotate platform (AVAnnotate) to create accessible digital projects featuring sound and video archival holdings.  The SSA will work closely with Dr. Tanya Clement, PI, and fellow team members associated with AVAnnotate at the University of Texas at Austin to coordinate, encourage, and document AVAnnotate activities, including research and teaching with audiovisual materials. The SSA(s) will be introduced to current project and design principles and methods and will help coordinate projects developed by AVAnnotate partners including the IIIF Consortium, the American Folklife Center and Labs (Library of Congress), the Furious Flower Poetry Center (James Madison University), the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies (Yale), the Harry Ransom Center at UT, the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky, the Woodberry Poetry Room (Harvard) and the SpokenWeb Consortium.

Essential Functions:

  • Support AVAnnotate project management. Assist with general scheduling meetings, documentation, and outreach; select materials for AVAnnotate workflows; and develop general orientation materials and training workshops.
  • Participate in and eventually conduct professional development sessions and other training workshops.
  • Promote work via blog posts, WordPress updates, and other forms of public humanities address, conference presentations, or articles.
  • Participate in a tiered mentorship program as a mentor and a mentee; meet regularly with direct supervisors at UT and partners to discuss project work and professional goals. Lead research teams with fellow graduate and undergraduate students. 

Marginal/Incidental Functions: Other related functions as assigned during the term of the Senior Student Associate Fellowship

Required Qualifications: Must be enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin. Must be willing to learn new technological skills and have an interest in audiovisual media, teaching, and data practices in cultural heritage institutions, libraries, museums, and archives.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching or working with the public. Strong communication (verbal and written), organizational, and analytical skills. Ability to work both independently and as a team member. Strong critical thinking skills. Experience using personal computers, word processing, and media software. While candidates from all programs of study may apply, candidates enrolled in a humanities program are strongly encouraged to apply. 

Hours and Benefits:Work begins one week before the first day of class until the last day of the month of the last class day. SSAs are not required to work during spring break or between semesters.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to standard office conditions, including continuous viewing of screens. Independent work as well as collaborative team-based working conditions. The selected applicant will be supervised and given supervision. The applicant selected for the position will be required to participate in a background check.
